Île de la Cité is a serigraph on paper with an image size of 30 x 36 inches, signed ‘Kondakova’ lower right and numbered lower left. From the edition of 325 and numbered 48/75 (there were also 25 HC and 225 on canvas). Framed in a classic, gold-tone moulding with oak-leaf details.
There may be no site in Paris more central, more integral to the Parisian experience, than the Île de la Cité (Island of the City) - the cradle of Parisian civilization. The site was first inhabited by the Parisii, who were conquered by the Romans in 52 AD. The Romans were subsequently pushed out of Roman Gaul in 486 by Clovis, king of the Franks, and the area remained the center of Frankish power in that area through the Middle Ages. Three major buildings still survive from the Medieval era - the Conciergerie, the Church of Sainte Chapelle, and, most notably, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which began construction in 1163 on a spot deemed sacred since Roman times. Remnants of medieval streets in the square in front of Notre Dame remain today.
Liudmila Kondakova has produced a masterpiece in her depiction of the famous cathedral on this famous island. Although it has been the focal point of thousands - perhaps millions - of photographs and paintings, surely there is no depiction more entrancing than what Kondakova has captured for us. The drama of the late afternoon sky, the foliage in full bloom, the shimmer of the approaching sunset upon the water, and the glow of this holy place have never looked so captivating.
The detail that Kondakova is able to achieve, on every tree or architectural design, combined with her delicate touch and subtle colorations, make this a piece that all Kondakova collectors, and lovers of all things Parisian, will be moved to make their own.

Liudmila Kondakova’s artworks are rich with clarity and light, reflecting in their extraordinary draftsmanship a sense of artistic and spiritual well-being. Her meticulous attention to detail allows us to become intimately involved in the life of her paintings, often depicting well-known streets and landmarks in Paris. In the artist’s words: “To me, these streets, with their worn cobblestones and aged buildings, evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance with a touch of melancholy. It is the ideal kind of space.” Since her childhood in Russia, Liudmila Kondakova has been fascinated by traditional art, and by a sense of spirituality that transcends common existence. Her painting technique follows the tradition of medieval egg-tempera painters. Her palette—influenced by the icon painters of Byzantium and later, Russia—is both vibrant and beautiful, with colors that blend in a subtle, poetic balance. Born in Russia in 1956, Liudmila Kondakova immigrated to the United States in 1991. A graduate of the Grabar Center in Moscow, she also attended Russia’s School of Sacred Arts, the Moscow Pedagogical Institute and the Moscow Art Institute. Kondakova connects her highly trained background to her artistic expression this way: “In my art, the essence and beauty has always rested in the details.”
